A Published Author Among Us!November 05, 2018
As a part of our True Blue approach, we love creating WOW! Moments for our residents. We get to know each resident on a personal level, finding ways to make their lifelong dreams a reality. We love this story about 97-year-old Dean, a resident from Lionwood Senior Living.
A Published Author
The True Blue team at Lionwood was delighted to find out that their resident, Dean, was a published author! In fact, Dean had a couple of boxes of the book he wrote.
Dee Geo and ‘Danny’
Dean uses the pen name Dee Geo and wrote a book called DANNY in 1995. It is the story of a young boy, Danny, who was a bit of a rascal. This young boy never gave up as he progressed from school days to college to a military career. When describing his book, Dean (Dee Geo) says:
“Danny was an ambitious, hard headed kid who grew up in a small town; not a bad kid, but a bit of a rascal. He was inventive, not one to accept impossibility in any venture. It was not an easy childhood. He finished adolescence with the advent of World War II and promptly joined the Navy, which tempered his independence a bit. He was wounded in battle and was discharged. He finished the war in the Merchant Marine, rising from the forecastle to master. He made the Murmansk convoy run. He was burned when his tanker was torpedoed, but he was one of the fortunate ones who survived. He experienced romance, but you will have to read the book to see how it turned out. DANNY is a rollicking yarn of the sea. It contains tales of some of the zany things that happen in war which keep sanity afloat, if only barely. If there is any message in DANNY, it is as well-hidden as any truth in the story. Read it for sheer entertainment and enjoy!” – Dee Geo
Dean is 97 years old and is still as active as he was as a young boy. Before moving to Lionwood, he was still going to the local karaoke club to sing the night away. Dean did spend several years in the Merchant Marine, and said that his book is based on the adventures that he himself or his friends had experienced.
After learning about his book and all the copies he wanted to donate, the True Blue team asked Dean if he wanted to have his very own book signing! He said he would absolutely love to do a book signing and share his work with other residents!
So, the True Blue team scheduled his Book Signing Event for September 4th. Several residents and family members attended. Dean gave a review of his book, then sat down at the table where he spent time visiting with each attendee while he signed the copy of his book that he graciously gave to them. Dean’s daughter and son-in-law also attended the book signing, and were both so proud of him!
Following the book signing, refreshments were served and guests were able to spend more time visiting with Dean about his book and his own personal adventures in the Merchant Marine. Dean was nothing but smiles the entire event. He thanked the True Blue team over and over again for allowing him the opportunity to share a big part of his life with everyone at Lionwood.
Since the book signing, Dean became quite the celebrity around Lionwood! His fellow residents were quite impressed to learn that they had a published author living among them who had led such an exciting life. What a star!
