A Special Oktoberfest Performance!December 03, 2018
It’s been a fun-filled and musical time here at the Blue Harbor Senior Living communities. Earlier this week, we posted about some of our fall WOW! Moments highlights, which included a special piano and musical performance for Sheldon Park Senior Living resident Stu. His musical talent just had to be showcased!
Today, we want to honor yet another musically talented resident. We love giving residents the opportunity to showcase their passions and skills, sharing their incredible gifts with the rest of the community!
Wendell is a resident of our Oklahoma-based senior living community, Lionwood Senior Living. When Wendell’s son first contacted us from New Jersey back in March, his first question was, “Does your community have opportunities available for my father to share his love of music?” Of course, our team’s answer was a resounding “YES!”
Our Resident Pianist
When Wendell moved to Lionwood, we learned of his extensive musical background and his ability to play several instruments. In no time, Wendell became our resident pianist. He entertained us daily in Lionwood’s Great Room, greeting and delighting us with beautiful music.
A Deeper Love
Even though Wendell was an extremely accomplished pianist, and absolutely loved playing the piano, his first and real love was playing the accordion. In fact, Wendell’s father played the accordion as a hobby. Growing up, Wendell would sit for hours listening to his father play. For Wendell, the accordion evokes incredible memories of his father. Eventually, Wendell started playing at the age of 6.
An Accomplished Accordion Player
In the 1950s, it was a really big deal for people to play the accordion. Wendell competed in many different contests, and took second place in New Jersey’s state-wide contest! He owned and taught at his own accordion recording studio for 10 years. He absolutely loves playing the accordion because of the wide variety of music he can produce from it.
One of Wendell’s most memorable accordion moments was when he did a duet with Myron Florin, an American musician best known as the accordionist on the Lawrence Welk Show from 1950-80!
A Talent to Celebrate!
After learning all of this about Wendell, the True Blue team just had to think of a way to get Wendell to share his accordion playing talent with our residents. When we first asked him, he was actually a bit hesitant, as the accordion is very heavy and he wasn’t sure if he could tackle it on his own.
However, after discussing it a bit more, his eyes lit up at the idea of sharing his love of polka. He said he would give it a try!
To create the perfect ambiance for an accordion performance, the Lionwood team planned a trip to Germany—Lionwood style! We featured Wendell and his accordion at the Lionwood Senior Living Oktoberfest Celebration.
The residents absolutely loved listening and dancing to Wendell’s amazing polka music. Wendell said he absolutely loved playing the accordion and that it was the most fun he had had in a long time. He thanked the team for inspiring him to move through with it, stating that it was experience he will never forget. How sweet!
