A Taste of Home: Using Meals as a Memory Care ToolJune 05, 2019
Food plays a major role in our lives: we eat to sustain our minds and bodies; we eat with family and friends to bond and socialize; and we eat when we're celebrating life's best moments. Not only does food help energize and nourish us, but it also brings us together. It’s no wonder many of us have so many wonderful memories tied with food!
Food, cooking, and eating engages our five senses. The smell of warm cookies can bring us right back to childhood memories of staying at grandma’s house. Given food’s ties to nostalgia and the senses, food and meals can be a very powerful memory care tool. Let’s learn more!
Senior Nutrition Challenges
Meal time is a time to eat our favorite foods, to reminisce about eating pizza every Friday night in college, or to perfect our lasagna recipe to the delight of our families. But meals aren't always easy for seniors. Seniors affected by Alzheimer’s or dementia may struggle with proper nutrition. As stated by the Alzheimer’s Association, they may become overwhelmed by food, forget to eat, or have trouble using silverware. Improper nutrition can be detrimental to health, so finding ways to make eating fun and accessible is very important!
Making Meals Fun!
At Blue Harbor Senior Living, we work hard to make sure meal time is fun and enjoyable! We encourage residents to pick and choose the meal options they desire, and meals are always able to customized to a resident's specific needs. In each community, chefs meet regularly with residents to gather ideas and suggestions, ensuring our menus are as nutritious as they are delicious.
Meals Enjoyed Your Way!
Do you have a very special meal you always enjoy? Do you need extra time to enjoy your meals? In addition to extended and flexible dining room hours, we’re also happy to make accommodations. Common accommodations for memory care residents include modified diet textures to accommodate chewing or swallowing issues, or a finger food diet to assist residents who may struggle using utensils.
Have a favorite meal or cuisine? Be sure to let us know so we can turn your dream meals into WOW! Moments!
Meals Enjoyed with Friends and Family!
Mealtime at Blue Harbor means social time: a time for friendship, community, and bonding. We love to eat and enjoy delicious meals together. Meals are a fantastic time, too, for families to visit. The act of sharing a meal is very special to all of our residents, bringing back positive and happy memories! We truly want mealtime to feel like home, serving delicious homecooked meals to share with friends and family.
Classic Options for All to Enjoy
Our restaurant-style dining rooms offer countless nutritious and flavorful meal options including resident favorites like coconut shrimp, country fried steak, stuffed meat loaf, roasted turkey, fried chicken, and BBQ for our weekly outdoor BBQ Day. Food is a Tradition!
Beyond our daily meals, we also use food as a way to celebrate the big moments. On Thanksgiving, we’ll enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving Day feast. On New Year’s Day, we’ll enjoy a classic New Year’s Day meal. Tying food to traditions can be a beautiful way to stimulate happy memories. We’ll celebrate anything from National Pizza Day to National Pie Day. You name it; food is one of our greatest joys!
