A True Blue Spring: Our Favorite Seasonal ActivitiesMay 01, 2019
Happy spring, all! Springtime is an absolutely beautiful time of year. Here at Blue Harbor Senior Living, springtime means lots of celebrations, gorgeous flowers, gardening, and some much-needed sunshine!
As a part of our activities program, our activities directors plan all types of wonderful springtime fun for residents to enjoy. What are a few activities we’re especially excited for? Let’s take a look!
Kentucky Derby Parties!
Ah, what’s better than fancy hats and delicious cocktails? Many of our communities are hosting Derby Parties complete with big hats, Mint Juleps, and horse betting. Residents will enjoy a classic menu of traditional Kentucky dishes such as Bourbon Pulled Pork, Southern Grits, and Kentucky Derby Pie. Yum!
Cinco de Mayo!
Communities will be planning a wide variety of Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Some will be making custom piñatas, others will be hosting salsa cook-offs. At all of the community fiestas, traditional Mexican food will be featured. Yummy!
Nurses’ Appreciation Day
We are so lucky to have amazing care teams here at Blue Harbor, including fantastic nurses. May 7th is officially Nurses Appreciation Day, and many of our communities will be celebrating! A few communities will be hosting special socials for residents who are retired nurses, such as garden lunches, tea parties, and brunches. Community nurses will be honored at these fun events, too! A big thanks to all our great nurses!
We want to honor all of the amazing mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers in our communities. Communities are planning special Mother’s Day activities, such as a Mother’s Day Brunches. So sweet!
Memorial Day is a wonderful time for us to get together as communities, enjoy the beautiful weather, and honor the brave veterans in our lives. Each community will be hosting a Memorial Day BBQ for families and residents to enjoy.
One of our communities is planning, with the help of a local DJ, a World War II-themed music tribute to the “Greatest Generation.” There will be a moment of silence and time to acknowledge the community veterans during a flag ceremony. Other communities will be volunteering to place flags on the graves of veterans.
Each month, communities are focusing on one of the Seven Dimensions of Wellness. May’s dimension is “vocational.” We will be giving back – a lot! Some ways that communities will be honoring this dimension will include:
- Volunteering at food banks
- Making sandwiches and having a clothing drive for a homeless drive
- Making dog treats and toys for a local humane society
- Hosting hot dog sales with proceeds going to animal shelters
