Adopt a Grandparent at Blue HarborJune 18, 2020
We hope everyone is staying safe and well! Here at Blue Harbor Senior Living, our communities have been working hard to provide residents with social connection, daily movement, and FUN—even during this challenging time.
In addition to staying active in quarantine, we’re finding lots of ways to stay creative, too! Just take a look at some of the ways our residents have been expressing their inner artists; the positivity boards make our hearts shine.
Residents are finding lots of ways to stay in touch with their loved ones, including daily FaceTime sessions with family and even safely distanced window visits.
What’s another way that we’ve been adding extra love to our residents’ lives? Through the Adopt a Grandparent Program!
Benefits of Intergenerational Friendships
When seniors and younger people become friends, magic happens! Seniors can give younger generations lots of wisdom, advice, and inspiration. And younger people can help seniors feel young at heart! Youth can help seniors feel cared about, and they can also help seniors stay up-to-date, helping them learn about the latest music, trends, and technology!
We wrote a blog all about the healing benefits of intergenerational friendships; read it in full here! In addition to staying young at heart, some of the benefits include opportunities for learning along with a deeper sense of connection, meaning, and purpose.
To help foster more intergenerational friendships, Blue Harbor recently launched an Adopt a Grandparent Program! This is such a lovely way for seniors to create new friendships even from a distance. Some of the ways volunteers can help include:
- Chatting with residents! Schedule a phone call or video call.
- Being a pen pal! Sending letters or post cards back and forth.
- Getting creative! Sending happy pictures, poems, or even artwork.
One of the best things about this program is that location does not matter; if you are a younger person (which also includes people in their 30s or 40s!), you can become an Adopt a Grandparent volunteer. Learn more about how to Adopt a Grandparent here.
Our Adopt a Grandparent Program is doing so well! At our community Sunshine Villa Senior Living, we had an entire school adopt Sunshine Villa grandparents!
The entire student body sends postcards to every resident at Sunshine Villa (Sunshine Villa has 123 residents!). It’s been an amazing project that the residents love to be a part of. Some residents write back to the students, building a connection and teaching students about their lives; other residents just enjoy the fun little postcards with cute stories and fun drawings. This spreads so much joy to our residents!
