Artist Breaks the Glass Ceiling!January 10, 2020 | Residence at Glen Riddle
Our lovely resident at The Residence at Glen Riddle Senior Living, Doris, is an incredible artist. In this edition of the Blue Harbor blog, we wanted to share her story along with the beautiful WOW! Moment we created in her honor!
Doris has always been an artist, but that is only one facet of her accomplishments. Doris graduated from the esteemed Moore College of Art and Design on a full scholarship. She broke a glass ceiling by becoming the very first female buyer for John Wanamaker and oversaw their art department! What an incredible rockstar.
Christmas Display Master
John Wanamaker was the only department store in the US that sold genuine artwork. Because of Doris’ reputation in the art world in the 1960s, John Wanamaker was chosen by the Nixon Administration to open the market between the United States and Russia for a cultural art exchange program which opened the doors for trade between those two countries. During that time, Russian diplomats stayed at the Levy house and Doris and her family showed them all the local Philadelphia attractions.
Doris was responsible for the famous Christmas displays at Wanamaker. Her job opening Christmas displays took her to Japan, India, Germany, France, England, and Italy. She told the team, “I may be Jewish, but I really love Christmas.”
WOW! Moment for Doris
We really wanted to make Doris feel extra special and wanted to honor her incredible artistic talent and accomplishments. We surprised Doris by having a local artist come and conduct an art class at The Residence! True to form, Doris followed the beat of her own drum when creating her art. Take a look at the incredible photos of her artwork, then and now.
We’re so happy to have Doris as a part of our True Blue community. To learn more about the types of WOW! Moments we plan, browse the WOW! Moment section of our blog, and be sure to follow us on social media for lots of fun updates. Happy New Year, all!
