Beverly’s Big RideAugust 31, 2015 | Sunshine Villa
Beverly, a dearly loved resident in Santa Cruz, CA, has lived at Sunshine Villa for over 6 years. She is a very private lady and keeps to herself most of the time. She rarely goes out except to Rite Aid or an occasional Bridge game, preferring to read in her room. Antonia, a Tailored Preferences Coordinator at Sunshine Villa, visits her weekly to see if she needs anything.
One day, Antonia was visiting her and talking about a fun experience she had thought of. It was to drive to the Watsonville Airport and go for a helicopter ride around the lovely Santa Cruz coastline. Beverly's eyes started to sparkle and she asked if she could tell a story of how she had met the love of her life when they both attended UCLA. He belonged to a Flying Club and on their first date, he took her on a Breakfast Flight in a two seated plane. "Her face lit up and her eyes became watery as she spoke about him," recalled Antonia.
Beverly said she was so scared and thought the plane would fall out of the sky any minute, but he kept reassuring her she was safe with him. "This was the beginning of the most wonderful time in my life," said Beverly. Later they married and shared a wonderful life together and it all started in the front of a two seated plane.
Beverly said just talking about it made her feel closer to him and brought back so many wonderful memories. Antonia, touched by her story, wanted Beverly to take another helicopter ride.
On August 13th, up, up and away she went! Beverly told the pilot her story and he was so touched by it that he asked her if she would like to sit in the front seat next to him. Beverly was thrilled and when it was time to take off she gave him the thumbs up and said “all clear”. Beverly was grinning ear to ear from take-off to landing.
Beverly had such a wonderful time and claimed she felt her husband was right next to her as she wiped away a tear. Sunshine Villa later presented her with framed photos of the day and Beverly still tells everyone that it was a day she will not forget!
