Encouraging Creativity in Seniors: Art Activities at Orchard ParkJuly 23, 2017 | Orchard Park
Here at Orchard Park Senior Living in Clovis, CA, our residents are a group of fun-loving, active, and creative seniors! From dancing to manicures to cooking, our activities program provides something for everyone.
In this month's edition of the Orchard Park blog, we'll be discussing the benefits of creative expression for the elderly. We'll also feature some of our favorite arts-related activities we enjoy here at Orchard Park!
Benefits of Creative Expression for the Elderly
There are many different benefits of art for seniors. Some of these include:
Creating Meaning as We Age
As we grow older, we may be wiser, but we still carry the same basic needs: to feel a sense of purpose. Through bonding with others and through making our own creative works, we can access a renewed sense of meaning, purpose, and connection.
Easing Anxiety Triggering Happy Feelings
As we face some of the realities of aging, such as progressive memory loss, we can start to feel more isolated. This can trigger feelings of sadness or anxiety. However, there are many ways to help seniors cope and stay engaged with the beauty of life.
By reconnecting with our five senses, we can be brought back into the moment and can feel more content and at ease. Art is a wonderful way to reconnect with our senses! We use our hands, observe the beautiful colors on our drawing board, and allow our imaginations to make us feel - and discover - like kids again. This entire process is very healing, calming, and fun!
Keeping Us Sharp!
Any time we try a new skill or participate in a creative exercise, we're engaging our minds. Arts and crafts can help keep us mentally engaged, improving or maintaining concentration, memory, and hand-eye coordination. Plus, it's a lot of fun!
Arts Activities at Orchard Park
In both our memory care and assisted living programs, we organize many different arts-related activities throughout each week. From painting to knitting to drawing portraits, arts and crafts sessions are always a huge hit among residents!
While arts activities are fun for all, they can be especially therapeutic for seniors with memory loss. Sensory-activating activities like arts and crafts hands-on cooking or massage can help seniors with Alzheimer's reconnect with their senses and feel calmer. For example, we recently organized an Arts and Crafts session doing activities that all involved sand. The feel of sand was soothing for the memory care residents. Plus, it was so much fun to see their artistic creations come alive!
Some our favorite arts activities include:
- Picasso Hour
- Arts & Crafts Hour
- Portrait Hour
- Shell Painting
For details on all of our different arts activities, feel free to check out our monthly activities calendars, which are updated on our activities page. If you'd like to come experience one of arts and crafts activities firsthand, we'd love to have you! Reach out and we can schedule a time for you and your senior loved one to participate.
