Feeling the Waves Splash AgainOctober 01, 2018
Here at Blue Harbor Senior Living, we’re True Blue. We want to get to know each of our residents on a personal level, fostering nurturing friendships and creating memorable experiences. The better we know our residents, the better we’re able to make them smile!
As a part of our True Blue approach, each of our communities creates special WOW! Moments for residents. Whatever’s on their bucket list, we want to make those dreams a reality!
Her Favorite Place in the World
Kirkwood Corners resident Mildred is 99 years old. Yes, she’s almost a century old, and is an absolute joy to be around! Mildred told us that York Beach in Maine was her favorite place in the world. She and her family used to visit York when she was a young girl, and Mildred often talks about how she and her sister would call York “My York Beach”! Ask Mildred, and she’ll happily tell anyone about York Beach and Nubble Lighthouse. We love hearing her stories!
A Trip to Remember
We wanted to help Mildred relive some of her best memories! So, the Kirkwood staff arranged a special trip in September. We surprised her with a trip to York Beach—and two surprise guests! Much to Mildred’s contentment, her niece and nephew were able to join us for our day at the beach.
When we arrived at the beach, we were able to find an amazing beach wheelchair that allowed us to get right down to the water. Mildred absolutely loved feeling the splash of the waves.
After the beach, we celebrated by going to The Golden Rod, an iconic restaurant right near the beach. Mildred loved her lunch and adored visiting with her family. After lunch, we drove by Mildred’s sister’s house and then headed to Nubble to admire the beautiful sights.
Mildred and her family reminisced about the times they shared in York. The whole ride home, Mildred chatted about her trip and her family. While we drove near Long Sands, she very quietly said, “I love the ocean; I could just look at it all day.”
Of course, no special day would be complete without ice cream. So, we stopped at Cold Stone on the way home for a treat. Mildred loves to tell the Kirkwood team that “Ice Cream” is her middle name. So sweet! The team now wonders if “Ocean” should be her middle name, too! We were so happy to be able to bring Mildred to her favorite place in the world. Bringing back positive memories is so healing, and it warmed our hearts to be able to bring such happiness to dear Mildred.
