Gone FishingJanuary 04, 2017 | Waterview Court
When one resident shared his love for fishing and being on the water, we decided to turn this into a special WOW! Moment. The resident had been living at Waterview Court for about a year, but hadn't been participating much in our planned group activities. In an attempt to help him engage in the activities that he loves, we asked him about his favorite leisure activity.
From a young age, the resident loved fishing and told us that his days spent fishing were his favorite days--even when he didn't catch anything. He just loved being outdoors and near the water.
We really wanted to bring this resident back out on the water so that he could once again enjoy his favorite pastime. So, in May 2016, the Waterview Court Senior Living staff arranged to take him on a fishing trip! At first, he was hesitant because he was unsure of his gait and physical abilities; it had been quite some time since he had last gone fishing, so he worried that his skills would be too rusty. However, with patience and a little reassurance from our senior care staff and his daughter, our resident fisherman agreed to take us up on our offer.
What a beautiful day it was! We fished for several hours, sitting on a long sturdy pier that had enclosed rails for everyone's safety. Our resident had a great time; he even caught two fish! We were touched to see how much joy and emotion this brought to our resident. He and the others on the trip had such a great time that we decided to plan a second trip in June. Our resident fisherman attended that trip as well and was just as successful as he was on his first trip with us!
