Hometown TourOctober 28, 2016 | Sheldon Park
Our October WOW! Moment was as informational as it was fun. This outing was inspired by Sheldon Park resident Jim Paddock's hometown pride. Jim often talks about his fond memories of his childhood growing up in Oakridge, Oregon. He is not able to get around as easily as he used to, so he has not been able to visit his hometown since he moved to Sheldon Park a year ago. The Sheldon Park staff quickly noticed his enthusiasm for his hometown, and sought out a way to help him relive some of his favorite childhood memories. We asked Jim if he would be interested in giving us a tour of Oakridge. He immediately agreed with excitement.
Sheldon Park provided the transportation. We also invited resident Wanda Dowdy and her brother, who were childhood friends of Jim. We spent the entire afternoon driving around Oakridge learning about the town and Jim's childhood. The tour began with a stop for lunch at A&W for cheeseburgers and root beer. Jim then asked us to go to the park that also served as his favorite fishing hole. He showed us his old high school and took us to the local fish hatchery. We even found Jim's childhood home. Jim smiled as he pointed out the history of old buildings and landmarks, telling us stories of some of his favorite memories. By the end of the day, Jim expressed how nice it was being back, even if it was just for a few hours.
Jim was hesitant to move away from the Oakridge area and is no longer able to drive, so this outing was the perfect opportunity to reminisce and trigger fond memories that he may have forgotten. Jim's tour provided us with such fun and knowledgeable insight, and was a pleasure to listen to. It was a fun-filled day learning about the history behind the town! We suspect this will be a day that Jim and the Sheldon Park staff will be talking about for a long time.
