Honoring Our True Blue VetsNovember 07, 2019
Veterans Day is just around the corner! This Monday, November 11th marks a very special time to honor those who have fought for our country.
At Blue Harbor Senior Living, we’re lucky to be the home for a number of incredibly brave veterans. For example, our amazing resident Ettie Walsh of Barkley Place joined the U.S. Navy when she was 20 years and remembers Pearl Harbor like it was yesterday. Learn more about her story and featured interview on our blog.
Every year, we make sure to honor the incredible veterans of our communities. Get more information on our 2018 blog for an idea of all of last year’s festivities! What will be doing this year? Each of our communities will be planning something special; let’s take a look at a few highlights below!
At Sheldon Park, the community will be honoring their veterans at 11:11 in the dining room. They will be acknowledging each branch of the service and will present veterans with special gifts. The ceremony will include prayer and singing.
Later in the afternoon, three Sheldon Park residents will be presented with a quilt from the Quilts of Valor! The Quilts of Valor is a foundation whose mission is to support all service members and veterans, offering them with wartime quilts. How beautiful!
At Golden Living, the True Blue team has a full day of festivities planned, including patriotic music, a Veterans Day Program, a Veterans Day Social, a Veterans Dinner, and more! What a wonderful way to spend such an important holiday.
Golden Living will also having the governor’s office send personalized letters for each of our veteran-residents. The letters will be delivered during Colonel Buckley’s presentation as the team reads the names of our veteran-residents.
Pines of Newmarket
On Veterans Day, the Pines of Newmarket will enjoy a Veterans Day breakfast with the local Cub Scouts group. The Cub Scouts plan on singing for the residents! Plus, they’ll get the chance to spend time with them and share a delicious breakfast together. What fun!
Meet the Vets
We have so many amazing vets at our Blue Harbor communities, but in honor of this year’s Veterans Day, we wanted to take a moment to put the spotlight on a few vets from Willow Park Senior Living.
Meet Seigmund! Seigmund (or “Seig”) was born in 1929 in a small German village in Poland. Having rescued his parents and his brother and sister from a Russian prison camp, Seig was sponsored by his aunt and uncle who lived in the USA. Seig arrived in the US in 1955. Six months after moving, he enlisted in the US Army and became a naturalized citizen while stationed in Japan. Seig served for two years and fought in the Korean War. Thank you for your service, Seig! What an amazingly brave and resilient soul!
William (or “Bill”) was born in 1926 on the island of Hawaii! Bill enlisted in the Army in 1945 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He dedicated the next 41 years to serving our country. Bill retired in 1986 as a Command Sergeant Major. This title represents the epitome of success as an enlisted soldier in the U.S. Army. We are so proud of our incredible and brave friend Bill!
