Honoring Woodie For Her ServiceDecember 19, 2016 | Golden Living
When our Executive Director Emily Von Gunten heard that the Utah Assisted Living Association would be honoring veterans at this year's annual conference, one of our residents came to mind right away. Woodie is a resident at our assisted living community at Golden Living who served in the Vietnam War. She is a very special part of our community and everyone here considers her a friend.
Emily had a great idea to take Woodie to the conference to be one of the veterans honored. She arranged a one-on-one personal trip to the conference in Layton, Utah, this past May, and worked with the conference staff to arrange having Woodie included among those being honored that day. Woodie got a chance to meet the keynote speaker, Keni Thomas, a US Army Ranger veteran and country music star who served our country during the Battle of Mogadishu, more famously known as the Black Hawk Down Mission. Emily purchased a copy of his book Get It On: What It Means to Lead the Way for Woodie, and Keni graciously signed it for her.
We also arranged to have Woodie's sister Betty in for a visit when she returned that evening, to continue the celebration of her service. The staff decorated her door with a patriotic wreath to commemorate her. Woodie shared memories and pictures with the community at Golden Living. It was a very special day for Woodie, and for the rest of the community too. We loved being able to recognize Woodie for her service.
