Joan Stiner: Choir Director ExtraordinaireOctober 02, 2019
There’s nothing more important to us than helping all our residents thrive, whether it’s through our tailored preferences, exciting WOW! moments, or our robust community activity options. In today’s blog, we’re shining a spotlight on Lionwood resident Joan Stiner who faced her fears and returned to an old passion—music directing.
Joan’s Musical Background
Joan Stiner was born and raised in Oklahoma City, where she spent her weekends playing country and pop music with various bands. After performing regularly at the Oklahoma Opry, Joan became a vocal music director. While she never pursued a full-fledged career in music, she considers music her passion, and she spent many years directing and writing music.
Joan Joins the Lionwood OASIS Performance Choir
When Joan moved to Lionwood last July, she found out that the Older Adults Sharing in Service (OASIS) Performance Choir needed a director. At the time, Joan felt like her health wasn’t where it needed to be and that she should focus her time and energy on getting healthier. But when April came around, the True Blue team encouraged Joan to reconsider and lead the choir in their Easter program. While she was nervous, she decided to give directing another shot.
The OASIS Easter Program
On the day of the program, Joan worried specifically about her oxygen tank—getting it on and off the bus, potentially having to change it out during the performance—and she wondered if all this effort had been worth it. Luckily, she was surrounded by support and encouragement from the members of the choir and Lionwood team members, and the performance was a huge success.
Joan was nothing but smiles the entire day and she had this to say about the experience: “I was so happy to get to direct the music for our OASIS group. It keeps me active, energized & gives me a purpose. I love the connection I get from the choir and I look forward to being a part of the group as their director for many more years to come.” We couldn’t have asked for a better ending this to story, and we’re so lucky to have such a talented and passionate music director in our midst.
