Jungle Safari AdventureMay 26, 2017 | Lionwood
Ivy Newsom is by far one of our sweetest residents. She and her husband Dale moved to our community in 2008 after living in Tonawanda, New York. Her husband suffered from Alzheimer's disease and she became his primary caregiver. Ivy spent the last few years caring for Dale, often letting her own health and happiness fall to the wayside. After Dale passed away, Ivy started to take care of herself again. During this time Ivy mentioned that she had always wanted to go on an African Safari, so the Lionwood Team made that happen for her!
We took Ivy out and spent the day at the Oklahoma City Zoo. She absolutely LOVED IT! She had a safari hat, jungle sunglasses, and binoculars. We rode the "safari" tram and saw all of the animals. The awesome folks at the zoo even set up a special meal in their conference room for us!
Ivy said one her favorite parts of the trip was when she got to pet the stingrays. She said that a stingray looked up at her and waited for her to take a picture. It was something she will never forget! Another moment she absolutely loved was feeding the lorikeets. They flew right to her and sat on her head! The entire staff at the Oklahoma City Zoo was very accommodating. They've made the zoo very accessible for seniors, and we had no issues with her being able to see and do everything she wanted in her wheelchair.
The smile on Ivy's face made this WOW! Moment something that all of us at Lionwood will remember for years to come. It's the little things that make life so great. and there is nothing better in this world than being able to make someone happy!
