Meeting Zoo AnimalsDecember 01, 2016 | Sunshine Villa
One of our Assisted Living residents had some very specific items on his bucket list and, much to his surprise, we were able to help him check those off in this once-in-a-lifetime WOW! Moment. David R. told us that he had always wanted to get up close to a tiger, and be able to touch and feed an elephant. Sadly, he was resigned to the fact that he wouldn't get to see these animals up close and said, "I guess I will die before I get to do these things." At that point, we knew we had to fulfill his wishes.
About a week later, a senior care staff member contacted Vision Quest Zoo and explained David's wishes. They gladly agreed to help check these items off of his bucket list. We're so lucky that the zoo staff could make this happen for a special resident. We were excited that David would get to have this experience and when he got his invite, he couldn't believe his wishes were about to come true.
We took him to the zoo, where he got to be less than five feet away from a Bengal Tiger, which was just on the other side of a glass wall! Before leaving the zoo, as if the day couldn't get any better, we reminded David there was one more item we hadn't yet checked off the list. We took him to the elephant enclosure where the zookeeper called one over and gave David carrots to feed it. It stood only three or four feet away from his wheelchair and looked enormous! He couldn't stop talking about these experiences the whole way home. We even made him a photo album so he could share and look back on these great memories. This was truly a day to remember both for David and Sunshine Villa staff.
