Ah the holiday season! It's a time for friends, family, and giving. It's also a time for some added stress and for many the winter blues. How can you make sure your senior loved one feels extra special this holiday season?
In this edition of the Orchard Park Senior Living blog we'll be offering up holiday gift ideas for your senior loved one. Read on for all the details!
A Visit or Special Outing
One of the best gifts for your senior loved one? Your time. Even if you can't arrange a visit over the holidays make it a point to arrange a day to spend with your senior loved one. If they live in a senior living community you can consult with the senior care team and make a plan to visit and join in some of the wonderful community activities. Or you can plan a special outing for just the two of you making plans to do a joint activity together such as crafts cooking going to see a movie or going out to eat.
As the old adage goes "A picture is worth a thousand words." Seniors absolutely love having pictures of their families in their rooms. Not only does it remind them of what matters to them most but it also gives them something to brag about when they have visitors! Nothing makes them more proud than showing off their beautiful family. So if you're looking for a great gift for your senior loved one consider framing a great family photo. Or you can create a digital slideshow and have that framed too!
Memory boxes are a very comforting and soothing gift for your senior loved one. If your senior is ever feeling blue they can open up their memory box and it will trigger happy memories. This can be especially healing for seniors with memory disorders too as it can help stir old memories and reengage their senses. Alzheimers.net offers great tips for how to make a memory box for seniors. Some ideas of things to include are:
- Newspaper clippings
- Favorite fabrics
- Favorite jewelry
- Vacation souvenirs
- Favorite recipes
Handmade gifts are a wonderful way to show your loved ones how much you care. If you knit consider making a scarf or a pair of gloves for your senior to enjoy. Other alternatives include things like handmade artwork or homemade treats. Anything with a personal and giving touch will warm your senior's heart and make them feel extra special over the holidays.
