Mildred The Eagle ScoutSeptember 29, 2017 | Kirkwood Corners
Very few are as passionate about the outdoors as our resident Girl Scout Mildred. At the age of 98 Mildred had lived in Naugatuck Connecticut for nearly 80 years where she spent decades as a Troop Leader in the Girl Scouts. This year at Kirkwood Corners was Mildred's first year away from her hometown so we wanted to surprise her in a meaningful way. When we learned about her long history with the Girl Scouts we started to plan a remarkable WOW! Moment.
Hiking and birding were some of Mildred's favorite hobbies and she's gone across country with her troop more than once. She had earned all but one badge to get her Eagle Badge. The only badge? Swimming. Her troop used to swim in Lake Quassy for the tests but Mildred didn't like putting her face in the water. Our team worked diligently to learn more about how we could make Mildred earn the Eagle badge and become what was then an Eagle Scout the highest possible rank in the Girl Scouts.
We surprised Mildred with a trip to a local Girl Scout camp where she was presented with a bag full of Girl Scout goodies a scarf with Girl Scout patches on it Tagalong cookies and plenty of other gifts. Mildred sang songs with the other scouts and they shared stories over a meal. After playing parachute Mildred and the other scouts watched baby birds fly away as they released them back into nature. With a twinkle in her eye Mildred shared her memories and lessons to fellow scouts and troop leaders. The Girl Scouts loved having her there so much that they gave her a patch of their own that says "Girl Scouts of the White and Green Mountains." When they had all heard the story of how Mildred was one badge short of achieving the highest title the scouts mailed her an Eagle Scout pin as soon as they got back to their home office.
Mildred felt so honored and nostalgic that day as she reminisced in so many years of history. She was invited to come again soon and we intend on continuing this tradition for Mildred.
