Neiman Marcus SurpriseDecember 20, 2016 | Desert Flower
One of our residents, Robert, started working for Neiman Marcus department store in 1970 as the Food Director in their restaurants. At that time, it was a small, family-owned business with just three store locations in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Houston. In a matter of six years, business had done so well that they had expanded to 13 store locations. Robert was responsible for the restaurants at each location. The restaurants were well known for serving fine cuisine from around the world. Year after year, the company continued to grow. By 1982, Robert had been promoted to Vice President, and in 1990 he received the Silver Plate Award, a prestigious recognition from the National Food Manufacturer's Association for outstanding operation of a seated restaurant. He received numerous other awards over the years and wrote two cookbooks. Robert retired after 26 wonderful years with the company.
Robert and his wife, Ollie, who have been married for 67 years, live at our Desert Flower Senior Living Community. For Ollie's birthday in June, we arranged a special surprise. We took Robert and Ollie to the restaurant at the Neiman Marcus in Fashion Square Mall in Scottsdale, Arizona. We had told the staff about Robert's history with the company and they treated Robert and Ollie like royalty. Tears rolled down Robert's cheeks as he talked with the manager and waitstaff about all of his fond memories with the company. Neiman Marcus served the happy couple a gourmet meal - on the house of course - and Robert ended the special day by buying his wife a birthday present from the department store.
A great big thank you to Neiman Marcus for helping us arrange such a special day for Robert and Ollie. We are certain it is one they will treasure for a long, long time.
