Never Too Old to Begin Again: New Year’s Resolutions for SeniorsDecember 21, 2018
Happy (almost) 2019, everyone! Your True Blue family here at Blue Harbor Senior Living has a really good feeling about 2019, and we can’t wait to keep you updated on all the great things happening within our communities!
For many of us, making new year's resolutions may have become a forgotten pastime. However, setting new year’s resolutions can be a great way to get the year off to a wonderful start. Whether we want to aspire to try new recipes or simply want to encourage ourselves to be more social, new year’s resolutions can be a great way to inspire us into positive action and transformation! Read on to get some inspiration on the types of new year’s resolutions our residents have been talking about.
Be More Active
Getting regular, low-impact exercise has many benefits for adults of all ages, many of which can be hugely helpful for seniors. In addition to improving immunity, increasing circulation, and helping to maintain a healthy weight, exercise can also help to boost mood and positive feelings! Plus, some studies indicate that regular, low-impact exercise improves brain health and memory. In addition to our regular exercise classes, residents really enjoy taking daily walks (learn all about the benefits of daily walks here!).
Try Something New
When we learn a new skill or try something new, we are filled with a deeper sense of purpose, enhanced joy, and a childlike curiosity. In our own communities, we offer lots of opportunities to try something new! Whether you've always wanted to write a book, learn a new language, start to paint, or learn a new recipe, our activities program has something for everyone. And hey! It may even help you meet the love of your life. It’s true; these two residents found love through taking art classes at one of senior communities (read the full story here!).
Assess Your Fall Risk
Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults. Be sure to find a way to organize your space with safety and fall prevention in mind. Reduce clutter, check your stairs for any loose boards or handrailing, and invest in no-slip mats for the bathroom. Additionally, seniors can improve their balance by doing joint-friendly stabilizing exercises such as Tai Chi, yoga, or light weights. Make New Friends and Keep Laughing
Laughter and friendships make the world a brighter place. From happy hours to ice cream socials to movie nights, living at a Blue Harbor community offers lots of opportunities to create new friendships. If you’re not living in an assisted living community right now, you can always look to create your own book club or cooking club, meeting like-minded seniors who share interests and hobbies!
See You in 2019!
