On Gratitude and the Power of CelebrationMay 14, 2019
"For each new morning with its light
For rest and shelter of the night
For health and food for love and friends
For everything Thy goodness sends." -Ralph Waldo Emerson
M.J. Ryan said, "Whenever we are appreciative, we are filled with a sense of well-being and swept up by the feeling of joy." And it's true: gratitude is essential to leading a full, happy life. With gratitude, we can pull ourselves away from feelings of regret or loss, and instead celebrate the beauty of all that we do have. At Blue Harbor Senior Living, we truly believe in the uplifting power of gratitude. In fact, we believe in its power so much that we turn every single day into a celebration!
Why Celebrate? The Power of Gratitude
Psychological research has shown a direct link between gratitude and greater happiness. When we free ourselves of envy and negative thinking, actively recognizing all that we are grateful for, our mood improves. Beyond an improved mood, adopting an attitude of gratitude can have wide-ranging benefits, from improved sleep, to better relationships, to increased physical health and immunity!
How We Cultivate Gratitude
At each of our active senior living communities, we cultivate gratitude by turning every day into a celebration. Whether it's National Grilled Cheese Day, Crazy Hat Day, a resident's birthday, or a national holiday, there's always an occasion to recognize and celebrate what we're thankful for. We may turn our celebrations into a party, or we may celebrate in a way that's more personal, like getting together to actively give each other compliments.
Daily Activities, Daily Fun
Take what may seem like an average Thursday in September. It's not a national holiday, but it's a day to be grateful for! So what do we do?
We’ll wake up in the morning and go on a morning walk or do a morning chair yoga session. Then, we’ll share some wonderful stories about our favorite places to travel. We may break away to go to book club or to take an art class! Then comes lunch. We’ll enjoy a delicious, home-cooked meal together. After lunch, we may play BINGO! or a board game. Or, we may want to take a little bit of alone time and rest. At 2 p.m., we have kittens visiting! Yes, it’s time for pet therapy. How cute! At 4 p.m., we enjoy a wonderful resident happy hour with live music. Later that night, after sharing dinner, we’ll watch a movie. Which one’s your favorite?
And that's just the itinerary for one average day in September. Every day is different, and every day is special. Whether you want to celebrate your love of poetry, a good book, a movie, or cooking, we have something planned for everyone!
To get an idea of all of the other ways we celebrate, browse one of our community activity calendars – or schedule a time to come by and experience our activities firsthand! The days are full of fun activities that are designed to nurture the mind, body, and spirit, all while keeping us connected to our friends and loved ones. We’d love to meet you!
How Can You Cultivate a Practice of Gratitude?
There are so many different ways to cultivate an attitude of gratitude. You might want to try keeping a daily journal. Every day before you go to bed, jot down three things you're grateful for. Or you might want to make a point to personally thank someone every week; whether it's a thank you note, e-mail, or a phone call, these acts of kindness and expressions of appreciation can have a powerful impact on you and the people in your life!
And to close things out: What are you grateful for today? Write it down, share it, and celebrate it! If you want to share it on Facebook, we’d love to hear from you; just visit our page!
