Parles Français? You Can Learn a Language at Any Age!August 30, 2019
Learning a new language is fun! Not only is it intellectually engaging, but it can also inspire you to travel and explore new places. It’s such a fascinating journey to understand and explore a whole other language.
Learning a Language as a Senior
Truly, we are never “too old” to learn a new language. While it may be faster for young kids to learn and absorb a brand new language, seniors are more than capable of picking up new skills.
In fact, nowadays, with all the access to different language-learning technology, learning new languages is even easier. Plus, since older people are blessed with a bigger vocabulary than the little ones (and usually a better grasp on grammar structure!), they may have some advantages in language learning.
Because most seniors aren’t working a regular job, they often have more time to devote to their practice, which can help them learn more quickly and really dive into the experience!
Benefits of Language Learning
In addition to language learning being fun, it’s also fabulous for the brain! Learning a new language can have many cognitive benefits, including:
- Improved memory;
- Improved brain health;
- Better social skills;
- And can even postpone the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s, naturally protecting the brain against aging.
Beyond the cognitive benefits of learning a new language, there are social benefits, too! Language learning can often be a group activity, where seniors can get together with others and help each other practice a new skill. Because language learning classes are usually group-based, this offers a great opportunity for seniors to get to know other like-minded peers.
Learning About a New Culture
If you love to travel, learning a new language can also help open up the opportunity to explore a whole new culture. You can watch films in the language you’re trying to learn, read books about the major cities where the language is spoken, and explore the culture and people who speak the language. Even if you can’t travel to the country directly, this is a great opportunity to virtually travel and expand your global worldview. What an adventure!
Language Learning at Blue Harbor
Several of our communities actually offer language classes from time to time! In fact, recently, one of our communities was teaching a Spanish class. This was a great way for seniors to meet each other and have lots of fun. Read all about their fabulous language learning experience here.
