Pilot For A DaySeptember 26, 2017 | Heritage Place
Glenna has been a resident at Heritage Place since October 2016. Shortly after Glenna moved into her home in our community, she met with our Tailored Preferences Coordinator Amber to discuss her personal history and favorite activities. When Glenna was asked about her most loved pastimes, she immediately said, "I love to fly!"
Born and raised in Layton, Utah, Glenna always dreamed of being a pilot when she was young. However, back in those days, there were very few female pilots. Instead, Glenna applied for a stewardess position with an airline, but quickly found out that she did not meet the criteria for the job. She was too tall and wore glasses, which were unfortunately not allowed at the time. Glenna eventually got a job as a travel agent which allowed her to fly and travel the world, but she still dreamed of flying a plane herself.
When our team first brought up the idea of taking a pilot lesson in a small airplane, Glenna initially declined, saying that she was too old and would not be able to fly an airplane herself. But knowing Glenna's love of flying, we decided to let her mull over the idea for a bit longer before giving her final answer. When we brought up the flying lessons again a few months later, Glenna was interested, as long as someone else flew the plane.
When the day finally came, Glenna was a little nervous but she was also very brave. Glenna and another resident went with Amber to Bountiful Flight in Woods Cross, UT. Glenna didn't say much on the way there, but once it was time to climb into the airplane, Glenna got right into the seat next to the pilot! Once we were up in the air, Glenna was so excited to be back in a small plane that she ultimately decided to take her turn behind the wheel. Glenna was so happy and proud of herself--she finally had a lifelong dream come true! This was truly a WOW! Moment for Glenna and all those who were able to see this amazing woman fly!
