Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice! Fall Cooking Projects for SeniorsNovember 01, 2017 | Orchard Park
Pumpkin spice, cinnamon, caramel: the tastes of fall are delicious! With all the upcoming holidays, we've had delicious food on our minds. What better way to celebrate this delicious season than through cooking with your senior loved one?
Benefits of Cooking for Seniors
Here at our sunny California-based senior living community, we incorporate cooking activities into our senior activities program. Cooking projects are fun and healing for the elderly at any stage of the aging process. They have specific benefits for seniors with memory disorders such as Alzheimer's, which is why cooking is such an important part of our memory care-specific activities program.
For a deeper look into the benefits of cooking for seniors with memory disorders, hop on over to our blog Meet Me in the Kitchen: The Therapeutic Benefits of Cooking for Senior with Dementia.
Simple is Better
If you're planning a cooking or baking project with your senior loved one (or as a group activity for your assisted living community!), it's good to remember this: simple truly is better. You don't want to overwhelm your senior loved one with lots of complicated steps. Instead, you want it to be a calming, fun process with great rewards (aka: lots of laughs followed by a tasty treat!).
Below we're listing a few simple recipes for seniors. We hope they inspire you!
Pumpkin Pie Bites
If you're looking for a great Pinterest board to follow to gain inspiration on activities for seniors with dementia, we really love MindStart Activities for Dementia.
On their board, we stumbled across lovely recipe for Pumpkin Pie Bites from the Sugar Apron blog. This unique and easy recipe is a great way to get your pumpkin pie fix, all with a fun twist. Think: a pumpkin pie in cupcake form. Delicious!
Pumpkin Spice Cookies
Okay, we may be going a little overboard with the pumpkin-themed recommendations, but nothing says fall and Thanksgiving like pumpkin-flavored desserts. The pumpkin spice aromas are sure to trigger happy delightful memories. We love these big soft pumpkin spice cookies. Plus, they're a little faster than the Pumpkin Pie Bites, so if you're short on time and patience, start with these! Link to the full recipe here.
Apple Pie Cups
Talk about the sweetest way to get your apple a day! Plus, it's easy as pie. We found a great tutorial to help you, so check it out here. You'll get the wonderful aromas of cinnamon and apples plus the fun excitement of eating a delicious pie from a cup. Don't forget the whipped cream!
We hope you found these tips to be helpful; be sure to follow Orchard Park Senior Living on Facebook for other community updates, and stay tuned for next month's senior living blog! Have a great Thanksgiving all!
