Religion & Aging: Spirituality for Seniors at Chateau BrickyardJuly 07, 2017 | Chateau Brickyard
For many seniors, religion and spirituality are an important aspect of their day-to-day lives. In our Salt Lake City senior community, spirituality plays a large role in the lives of many of our residents. It is important to note that while Chateau Brickyard does have many residents of the LDS faith, we are not an exclusive LDS senior living community. Residents of all faiths are welcome at Chateau Brickyard. Read on to learn more about the powerful role that religion can play in the lives of seniors, and the types of spiritual programs we offer in our community.
Spirituality and Aging
Religion can provide support, a sense of community, and comfort for people of all ages. A study conducted by the Center for Spirituality Theology and Health and Duke University Medical Center found that spirituality is related to lower perceptions of stress, a greater sense of purpose, and hope and even a faster recovery from depression. But while we often think of seniors as wise and experienced, it is important to consider that many seniors are still growing and learning in their spirituality. Thus it is important to offer spiritual programs for seniors that give them space to grow and connect more deeply with their faith.
In our Salt Lake City independent living community the benefits of spirituality in old age can be seen daily. Our staff members have observed residents of different beliefs coming together to pray as one group. One staff member noted, "There is such an overwhelming respect for one another's beliefs at Chateau Brickyard." In our community, it is clear that even though our residents may have different beliefs, they know the importance of being generous and helping each other.
Spiritual Programs for Seniors at Chateau Brickyard
In our senior independent living community, there are many spiritual activities that our residents can take part in if they so choose. In order to make these activities convenient and easily accessible for all residents, the majority are held on-site. Our Activities Director Gigi Gazani is even able to reach out to church representatives at a resident's request. Some of our most popular spiritual activities include:
Our prayer circle activity is held every Wednesday at 6pm. During prayer circle, residents from all denominations come together to pray for other residents who are sick or in the hospital.
Residents can join us for an LDS bible study every Thursday at 6:15pm. A volunteer from the church comes to our community and leads our LDS seniors in the Bible Study.
LDS Church Service
LDS church services are held every Sunday at 10:15am. We are so lucky that we are able to provide these worship services on-site in our community. The LDS church services consist of mass followed by a lecture. We also offer temple trips for our residents who want to take advantage of our community's close proximity to downtown Salt Lake City.
For our residents who are not of the LDS faith, we offer a non-denominational worship service every Sunday at 2:45pm. This worship service is ideal for seniors of all different beliefs!
LDS Study Group
Our community also has a LDS study group every Sunday at 4pm. This activity is hosted by one of our own residents Anona. Each week, Anona plans new lecture and discussion topics based on relevant current events. We love to encourage our residents to bring their own activity ideas to life!
From spiritual activities to celebrations and fitness classes, we are always striving to expand the events we offer to our residents at Chateau Brickyard. Make sure to download our monthly activity calendar for up-to-date information about all activities.
