Staying Active in Quarantine: Virtual Exercise IdeasMay 15, 2020
The entire True Blue team is wishing you health and wellness during this challenging time.
A few weeks back, we published an article about self-care during COVID-19, where we emphasized everything from healthy nutrition to consistent exercise. Not only is exercise a great way to get a mood boost, it can actually help stabilize your immune system and improve sleep.
That’s why regular exercise is so important to us here at Blue Harbor. What are some ways we can practice safe and socially distanced exercise during COVID-19? Let’s see what our communities have been doing!
If you can, consider taking a walk outside each day. Be sure to wear a mask and maintain at least 6-ft distance from anyone in your vicinity. Our residents have loved going on daily walks with team members. You get your Vitamin D, fresh air, *and* your daily exercise; a win-win! Learn more about the benefits of daily walks on our blog.
Sunshine Villa Healthy Living
One of our communities, Sunshine Villa Senior Living, shared stories about their walks. “Sunshine Villa is working hard towards keeping residents fit and healthy. We are taking all residents on regular walks and exercising in the hallways.” We love it!
If you live in a heavily populated area, be extra cautious about taking walks and ensure you are always able to keep a safe distance and are wearing a mask to protect yourself. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after your walk, and use hand sanitizer to stay protected (review our safety tips here).
Even if we can’t have large group gatherings, we can still lead classes from our doorways! That’s right; maybe it’s time to blast some ‘80s music and do some dancing from our individual doorways. What a fun way to stay active and wave hello to your neighbors from a safe distance!
We are so lucky to have technology to help give us opportunities to stay active. You can choose short workout videos and exercises designed for older adults, such as Silver Sneakers.
If you’re in more of a mood for dancing, there are also lots of fun dance-related exercise videos, like this low-impact senior exercise video.
Yoga and stretching is a fantastic way to improve circulation, stay active, and reduce physical pain. Nowadays, we love that there are so many ways to practice yoga online.
