Sustainability in the Senior Living IndustryDecember 28, 2018
Business owners are becoming increasingly aware of their impact on the environment. Here at Blue Harbor, we are responsible for limiting our impact on the environment, finding ways to preserve more resources and adopt a more environmentally sustainable business model. Here at Blue Harbor, how do we offset our impact? Read on for all the details.
Assessing Our Current Impact
Blue Harbor communities are home to more than 2,000 residents. We employ nearly 1,500 employees. Our communities are open and operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. In any given year, Blue Harbor communities share more than 2 million meals together, celebrate thousands of birthdays, host hundreds of events, and create countless meaningful memories. To make all that possible, however, we use a lot of natural resources.
How We Offset Our Impact
To offset our use of natural resources, we have taken a number of steps aimed at creating a more sustainable future. Here are just a few eco-conscious initiatives we have taken on over the past few years.
#1 LED Lights
Last year, we performed a successful LED light retrofit at a pilot community in California. This retrofitting reduced our common area lighting consumption by 65% while providing brighter lighting for residents and employees.
Following this pilot, we started rolling this program out to all communities and plan to finish this process very soon. Currently, over 75% of our resident rooms have LED lights and we are committed to retrofitting 100% of our rooms in the coming year.
We have installed more than 400 occupancy sensors. These sensors automatically turn off lights in common areas, offices, and storage areas when not in use.
#3 High-Efficiency Appliances
We are replacing inefficient toilets, aerators, and showerheads across our communities. To date, we have installed 1,500 high-efficiency water fixtures and 2,500 aerators.
To divert our waste stream away from landfills, we have increased recycling programs at our communities.
#5 Green Products
Our communities have been using green-certified housekeeping products, flooring, and paints since 2012.
Corporate Responsibility to Sustainability
At Blue Harbor, we believe it’s our responsibility to do what we can to make a positive impact on our environment. Our primary goal is to create comfortable, engaging living environments that promote wellness for our residents, along with work environments that allow our employees to learn, grow, and thrive. If we can reduce our impact on the environment all while improving our living and workspaces, we’ve found a fantastic solution. Thank you for joining us in this effort, and cheers to a happy, healthy, and fantastic new year!
