The Amazing Benefits of Music for SeniorsMarch 18, 2019
“Music is the food of soul.” – Arthur Schopenhauer
Music is deeply tied to our memories and emotions. In an instant, a song can bring us back to a specific time in our lives. Or, it can bring us a rush of joy and a lift in mood. Music is powerful and therapeutic, which is why music is such an important part of all our Blue Harbor programming! In this edition of the True Blue blog, learn all about the benefits of music for seniors!
Music Encourages Physicality
Ever found yourself inadvertently tapping your foot along to the beat? That's because music encourages physicality! From foot tapping and head nodding to full on dancing, music gets us in the mood to move! We incorporate a lot of music into our movement-based classes (for one example, learn all about this community’s fun dance classes!).
Music and Emotions
We all have off days. Have you ever been in a lower energy mood, but then listened to a beautiful song, and felt an immediate mood lift? Well, that’s the power of music! Music can help energize and inspire us.
For this reason, we frequently host live musical entertainment for residents; it’s one of their all-time favorite activities! From live piano players to high school choirs to karaoke, we’re always finding ways to incorporate music into our activities and entertainment programming.
Music Brings Us Together
A shared love of a song or musician can bring us together. Live music or singing allows us to bond and connect with others. Music, truly, is a form of sharing the soul. It inspires us to dance, feel, and relax. At Blue Harbor, we love to incorporate music into our social activities. Whether it’s senior prom or dance class, music lifts our spirits and brings us together!
Musical Talent at Blue Harbor
In addition to inviting musicians from the outside to share their musical gifts, we have so many residents with incredible musical talent themselves! Yes, it’s time for a humble brag! For a few shining examples, check out these fun WOW! Moments, including a special Octoberfest performance from our Sheldon Park resident and a moving choral performance from a talented Lionwood resident; how sweet! .
If you’d like to experience one of our musical activities firsthand, we’d love to meet you! Get in touch with one of our True Blue team members to schedule a time to say hi. Stop by to drop us a line on Facebook, too, to let us know about your favorite music from the past!
