WOW! Moment: Jeanne’s Christmas BlessingFebruary 06, 2019 | Lionwood
One of the cornerstones of the Blue Harbor approach? WOW! Moments! We absolutely love creating special moments for our residents. If we find out that a resident has a specific passion or interest, we find a way to celebrate that. In this edition of the True Blue blog, learn how we celebrated Jeanne’s incredible vocal talent; she’s a star and a blessing!
Jeanne A. moved to Lionwood Senior Living, a Blue Harbor Senior Living community in Oklahoma City, OK, last March. She had been living at home alone and unfortunately broke her hip when she went out on her front porch during an ice storm. After her hip surgery, her family decided they wanted to help Jeanne transition into a senior living community.
Her family absolutely loved their tour of Lionwood! However, as a very artistic, eclectic, and creative woman, Jeanne was worried that she wouldn’t have anything in common with the residents. Her family shared with the team that Jeanne was a classically trained pianist and vocalist, and belongs to the Lady’s Music Club. They feared that she would lose her interest in music if she moved to a community, and that she would never play the piano or sing again.
A Musical Community
When our team heard about Jeanne and her family’s worries, we immediately put their fears to rest. They were able to meet other residents that she would have things in common with, and they were able to learn about our Lionwood OASIS (Older Adults Sharing In Service) musical performance group. Her daughters said that it would be the greatest blessing to have Jeanne transition successfully to a senior living community, and that they would be thrilled if she would consider getting involved in OASIS.
Celebrating a True Talent!
After Jeanne moved in, the team was able to learn more about her musical talents. She played many instruments as a young girl, but piano was the one she loved the most. As an adult, Jeanne attended the University of Central Oklahahoma to study music. As an adult, Jeanne remained musically active, singing in an all ladies’ musical group with women who were all accomplished musicians and vocalists. A few years ago, she started having difficulties with her throat, however, which affected her voice. She stopped singing but continued playing the piano.
When Jeanne first moved to Lionwood, she was hesitant to express her musical talent. However, it didn’t take long for her to take interest in joining OASIS!
Since joining OASIS, Jeanne has attended numerous practice sessions with the group, including rehearsals for their recent Christmas Program which they took on tour to nearby assisted living communities and senior service organizations. The Christmas tour was a huge success!
Star of the Show
One of the highlights of the show was Jeanne’s solo performance of “Oh Holy Night”. The video we took doesn’t begin to do it justice, as her voice is absolutely stunning; however, her performance truly brought many people in the audience to tears. You can see the video posted to Lionwood’s Facebook page here.
Jeanne’s performance brought tears to her fellow OASIS members, too. Being able to see Jeanne sing and continue to do what she is most passionate about was a beautiful thing to witness.
The team at Lionwood absolutely loves hearing Jeanne in her apartment playing the piano and practicing for her next performance. She sings with the voice of an angel, and it is truly a blessing to have her call Lionwood home. Jeanne thanked the team for the opportunity to sing with the group. She said that being able to join OASIS has been a true blessing. Jeanne is truly an inspiration to us all!
